The Turn of River Fire Department Inc. proudly protects an area of 16 square miles. We operate out of 2 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. The State of Connecticut chartered the Turn of River Fire Department Inc. in May of 1928. A temporary firehouse was built and completed in October of 1928, which housed our new 1928 Maxim fire pumper. The original permanent Station #1 on Turn of River Road was completed in July of 1936. Due to the severe manpower shortage caused by World War II, paid staff was added to supplement the volunteers in 1944. In the early 1950’s the size and growth in our district required that we build another station on the west side of our district, TRFD Station #2. In 1966 TRFD opened a new fire Station #1 on Turn of River Road, to accommodate the growing department. Our present fire district covers about 16 square miles of the City of Stamford. TRFD protects numerous Fortune 500 corporate headquarters, along with a sizable commercial district and residential area. TRFD also protects the length of the Merritt Parkway in Stamford. The number of responses has steadily increased over the years. In 2002 TRFD answered a total of 2,126 calls.
